Tiling onto Anhydrite Screeds (also known as Easy Screed)

A relatively new method of screeding, anhydrite screeds are manufactured using calcium sulphite, more commonly known as Gypsum. This type of screed has the advanatge of being quicker and lighter than conventional sand and cement or concrete screeds and is also competitively priced delivering good value.

However, anhydrite screeds need special attention when it comes to applying your finished floor, particularly with tiles, timber and vinyl floor coverings. While this type of screed sets quickly the amount of moisture is very high and takes longer to dry out, approximately 1 day for each 1mm of anhydrite screed. A typical 50mm screed will take up to 50 days to dry out.

Also, with gypsum being the main material in anhydrite screeds, the need to prepare the surface before fixing tiles is vital. Two key preparation steps are required:

1) The surface should be mechanically prepared by sanding to remove any latency and fines.
2) The prepared surface must be primed with 2 coats of an appropriate acrylic or SBR primer. TileStyle recommend BAL Prime APD.

More to follow.
